  • The NFL’s Greatest Rivalries

There’s a reason some NFL fixtures are more than the sum of their parts on the schedule. Rivalries have a way of making every snap in Week 5 feel personal, thanks to the history and emotion they bring with them.

For UK fans, these are exactly the kind of games that deserve a bucket-list trip. You’re not simply going to watch a game – you’re putting yourself in the middle of decades of tradition, chants and old grudges. The atmosphere at these historic franchises is something you genuinely can’t put into words until you’ve been there.

We’ve put together a look at three of American football’s premier rivalries: how they came to be, the stars and stories that have defined them, and what makes for such a unique experience when you’re there in person.

What gives NFL rivalries their hold on fans

This is where the league is at its most human. Form and records get put aside because the other team’s badge means something. You can see it in the way a team finds another gear.

It also defines the fanbase. Before kick-off, walking to the stadium or in a bar, you’ll pick up on it in the tone of voice when a certain opponent is mentioned. It’s never polite, invariably passionate and quite entertaining if you’re within earshot.

For those who make the journey, it’s the best way to take in American football culture at full volume. The tailgates are larger, the decibels higher and the big plays have an edge to them. Planning your US holiday around a rivalry gameday weekend is absolutely worth it – trust us on that one.

Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears: as old as the sport itself

You could call this pure heritage. The Packers and Bears have been at it for over a century, with an old-school black-and-blue identity that’s as appealing now as ever.

The roll call of legends is impressive. George Halas, Walter Payton and Brian Urlacher have given the Chicago side its hard-nosed reputation. Green Bay has had its own share of giants, from Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr through to Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. The eras may differ but the tension is constant.

Take the 2010 NFC Championship at Soldier Field. With a spot in the Super Bowl at stake between two sides that have no tolerance for being bested by the other, it was textbook rivalry football: high stakes and no margin for error.

Then you have the fans. In some ways they inherit the animosity. It’s passed down in families and endures through friendships, turning every meeting into something of a generational argument.

Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants: bad blood and bright lights

Where the Packers and Bears are about tradition, the Cowboys and Giants put on a show. Two huge media markets and a lot of star power.

Every decade has produced its headline acts. In Dallas you have Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith. On the New York side there was Lawrence Taylor’s brand of defensive mayhem and Eli Manning’s command in some key seasons. When both are running hot the whole of the NFC East feels it.

The appeal lies in the contrast. Dallas comes in with “America’s Team” swagger and the Giants with a chip on their shoulder. It’s a clash of identities as much as styles.

Being in the stands for this one is something else. The noise is unrelenting from first drive to the final whistle and a third-down stop in October is met with the same fervour as a January playoff victory.

Baltimore Ravens vs Pittsburgh Steelers: like a street fight

Some rivalries have age, this one has intensity.

Ravens-Steelers is a newer story in the annals of the NFL but has yielded some of the most brutal, close games in a short time. It’s why the AFC North has the reputation it does.

The players involved read like a defensive hall of fame panel: Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Terrell Suggs for Baltimore; Troy Polamalu and James Harrison for Pittsburgh, with Ben Roethlisberger in the thick of it. These were teams built to hit and to remember it.

The mythology was cemented in the late 2000s and early 2010s with playoff meetings where a single sack or turnover could turn the tide. The names might have changed since then but the tone hasn’t.

The supporters here are ferocious and know their game. They want physical play and four quarters of stress. If you want to feel it in your chest from the opening whistle, get yourself to a Ravens-Steelers gameday.

These three are the heartbeat of the NFL. Between the history in Green Bay and Chicago, the spotlight in Dallas and New York and the all-out nature of Baltimore and Pittsburgh, they’re proof of what makes the league what it is. For a UK fan, witnessing one live isn’t just ticking a box – it’s the full American football experience, and one that stays with you long after the season is done.
